The unique comprehensive eye programme which encompasses all components of eye care, prevention, promotion & rehabilitation was born out of the need of community in which young friends well versed in eye care were drawn to the ideals of SEWA Rural. The programmes include modern treatment of eye diseases by advanced equipments in hospital as well as in Netra Raksha Kendra for the tertiary eye care. Arrangements have been made for operations by microsurgery like Keratoplasty and intraocular lense placement for cataract. Spectacles are made available in the hospital campus as well as camps through optical shop at low cost.

Looking at yearly data about 50,000 patients get treated & 6500 of them get operated upon who come from more than 100 camps beside many of them coming directly to the hospital. Moreover, about 850 patients are given spectacles at a concessional rate. Sight Savers International (UK), many philanthropic trust, well wishers & local community organizations provide necessary financial assistance. As a result about 65% patients get free treatment.

Special clinics in Netra Raksha Kendra are functional for retina, and oculoplasty. Soon Low vision clinic will start functioning. The eye programme has modern facilities like operating microscopes, Diode & Yag lasers, auto refractor, Phaco-emulsification & automated perimeter. Surgeries like cataract with intraocular lense implantation & keratoplasty are regularly performed. Under this programme Jhagadia & Valia blocks were made cataract free as per WHO guidelines.

Diagnostic eye camps are regularly organised in interior villages of Bharuch, Narmada, Surat & Vadodara districts. The local community does necessary publicity in surrounding area of the proposed camp site. As a result people get treatment & spectacles, if necessary, near their homes. And yes ........ patients with cataract are identified and brought to the hospital at Jhagadia on the same day. Similarly they return home the next day following the operations. Hundreds of old persons who used to live a dependent life are now living a new life following the restoration of their vision. As a result WHO's goal of vision 2020 is getting impetus at least in this area. In all these programmes regular provision of health education to community provided during day & night is playing important role. Satellite centres are functioning at PHC, Netrang (weekly), CHCs at Dediapada, Sagbara, Mangrol, Zankhvav & Valia (monthly). 4 vision centres in Nandod taluka are visited weekly.

Training programmes for ophthalmic assistants and out reach paramedics are organised for organizations from Gujarat & beyond.

SEWA Rural is a member if the Vision 2020 right to sight India Programme which is an advocasy group to provide impents to the goal of National Programme for control of blindness.

We have prepared a manual & a video DVD in English & Gujarat on " Operation theatre Protocol " based on our protocol & scientific literature search on the subject. It is turning out to be very useful for fractional implementation particularly in view of obscene of such guideline being available in the nearly 20 partner hospitals of Sightsovers International in Rajasthan, U.P., M.P., Bihar, Chhatisgarh, Jarkhand and West Bengal

SEWA Rural is a registered " Eye Ball collection centre with the Eye Bank Association of India."
In the year 2008 SEWA Rural received the award for outstanding work in the field of community ophthalmology from community Ophthalmology Society of India Which is on initiative of Venu Eye Institute & Research Centre.
